2008 SINGAPORE CRASHGATE SCANDAL
The Formula One World Championship is boiling over in the heat of the Singaporean streets. Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen, as well as McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Renault’s Fernando Alonso, are battling for one of motorsports’ most prestigious titles: Formula One World Champion.
It’s just an everyday race, until BOOM! Renault’s Nelson Piquet Jr. hits the wall and the safety car is deployed, giving his teammate Fernando Alonso a perfect pit-stop and allowing him to win the race. It could not have gone better for Alonso unless it was planned… wait was it?
Set in Singapore 2008, delegates will be challenged in a crisis committee to grapple with one of the biggest controversies in Formula, Crashgate. One history and investigate whether or not there was race fixing, what this means for the championship title, and what precedent this sets for the future of the sport. Lights out and away we go!

Antonia Mavrakis is a sophomore studying Finance at the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business. She’s been involved in Model UN for six years and served as the Co-Crisis Director for the Wreck-It Ralph committee at UMUNC VI. She loves bringing a touch of whimsy to everything she does (especially crisis)! In this year’s Formula 1 committee, Antonia is revved up to see how delegates steer their way through the twists and turns of debate!
