THE RIGHT TO REPORT: PROTECTING JOURNALISTS IN TIMES OF CONFLICT

The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is one of the main committees of the United Nations General Assembly, dedicated to addressing human rights, social development, humanitarian concerns, and cultural issues on an international scale. Its mission is to promote fundamental freedoms, protect vulnerable populations, encourage international cooperation, and develop solutions to pressing global challenges.

The expansion of digital journalism and social media has had a unique impact on how journalism and social media access are affected in conflict zones across the world. Particularly, the invaluable work of journalists makes them continuously vulnerable to danger and oppression in high conflict zones.

In this committee, delegates will explore the role of journalism and social media access in conflict zones and discuss how the international community should approach these considerations. Topic A will call on delegates to analyze the role of states and international bodies in protecting the livelihood of journalists in regions under high conflict zones. Topic B will focus on the issue of protecting data and social media access from oppressive state controls during times of high conflict, all while keeping in mind institutional and wartime concerns.
