BEYOND BORDERS: PROTECTING REFUGEES AND BUILDING PATHWAYS TO INTEGRATION
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is the United Nations agency mandated to protect refugees, forcibly displaced people, and stateless individuals. Its mission is to safeguard the rights and well-being of displaced populations, provide humanitarian assistance, support long-term solutions, and help individuals rebuild their lives in safety and dignity. As conflict, persecution, environmental disasters, and other humanitarian emergencies continue to force people from their homes, the international community faces growing challenges in ensuring adequate protection, equitable access to resources, and sustainable opportunities for resettlement and integration.
This committee will address two pressing issues facing refugees worldwide. Topic A will focus on the growing use of third-country processing and detention arrangements for asylum seekers. Delegates will examine the legal, ethical, and humanitarian implications of transferring asylum seekers to third countries, with particular attention to human rights protections, access to fair asylum procedures, and the responsibilities of host and receiving states. Topic B will examine the barriers refugees face when entering the workforce and integrating into the economies of their host countries. Limited access to education and vocational training, language barriers, difficulties in obtaining recognition for foreign qualifications, discrimination, and a lack of professional networks often prevent refugees from securing stable employment.
As displacement continues to challenge the capacity of governments and humanitarian organizations, delegates must balance national interests with international obligations and humanitarian responsibility. Through debate and collaboration, they will work toward practical solutions that protect the rights of displaced populations, improve access to sustainable livelihoods, and ensure that refugees are given the opportunity not merely to survive, but to rebuild their futures with dignity.
